Packet is one of many digital forms of communication used by Amateur Radio Operators to pass information, and to communicate. Packet can be transmitted and received using a home PC (or laptop), a ham radio, and a TNC (Terminal Node Controller). This TNC takes information from your computer and changes it into a form that can be transmitted by your radio. These transmitted messages are sent in small bursts (thus the name packet) for the transmissions.

You can also use your PC's sound card to send and receive packet. The following link has information about sound card packet.
Using your PC, software from the below page, and a common police scanner, you can display this packet information on your home computer.
DX Packet Cluster
1) Type "C KN4F-1" (This logs you into the node)
after you are connected,
2) Then type "C KN4F" (This logs you into the DX Cluster node)
You can now monitor DX packets on the system.
1) "C KN4F-1 V WT4DX-1" (this connects you to the Cluster node through the Puryear digi).
2) After connecting, now type "C KN4F" (this logs you into the DX Cluster system itself)

Information about foreign ham radio stations, in operation, (DX) is sent through packet, also. This information is called DX Packet Cluster. You can receive this information free of charge over your packet station. Information transmitted includes the foreign Ham Radio Station's call sign, frequency being operated, the ham operator entering the information, and the time the information was entered. Ham operators can then switch to those frequencies and make contact with that foreign station.
Other frequencies, in the West Tennessee Area, that can be monitored for packet data:
145.010 mhz. 145.050 mhz. 145.590 mhz. 147.585 mhz. (DX Cluster in middle TN)
144.390 mhz. (A.P.R.S. see below)
You can also learn about other packet and digital modes of operation at the following web sites:
